Boston Bookarts Center?

Over the last few months the studio has acquired enough space and equipment to be a seed space for a book arts center. We can now take rags and turn them into bound editions. If you or anyone you know is looking for a space to make work in or to collaborate on a project please send them our way. We can be reached by e-mail at bostonpapercollective@gmail.com                                       or by phone at 617-863-0886

  1. I would love to come and learn how to make paper over several days. Do you offer workshops of that length?

Yes, please… A Boston Book Arts center is a terrific idea! NY has their CBA, San Francisco has their SFCB. Kinda strange Boston has no bookarts center.

Such a center could teach classes across the spectrum, from paper making to letterpress to creative books.

  3. Thomas and I were briefly discussing this when he visited the press last week. Seems like something that ought to happen in Boston.

  4. It’s a GREAT idea! I’m sure the community would be willing to pay you all a living wage for classes and workshops. Check out NY’s CBA and even Hollander’s in Ann Arbor for ideas of workshops and fees. It would be fabulous to see a vibrant book arts center in Boston. And teach bookbinding also! And book design! And typesetting! And of course printing!

  5. I looked into space in JP on Washington at Green Street which would be convenient to the T (Green on the Orange). 6200 sq ft, unheated, nominal lighting, no facilities. It’s currently “warehouse” space. $8/sq ft. Very inexpensive, but too large and too raw. If it was subdivided, heated lit and plumbed, suddenly it’s $25/sf. Good bye.

The problem with a Center in Boston is price per square foot.

I will be teaching traditional (not plastic plate) letterpress classes in my shop. Tell your friends.

      Hello Michael,
Thanks for the comment, an additional problem is convincing people to pay for equipment and overhead. I just added a vandercook sp 20 and some misc. cases of lead as well as a collection of binding equipment to the paper studio. I need to update this page. I am hoping to use our current and affordable location (5min walk to Sullivan station on the orange line) as a seed project for something larger with a business model similar to Pyramid Atlantic in DC. I didn’t see anything on your website about classes, if you have a link feel free to share it.

  6. Hi Melinda,

The class idea is still gelling. Also considering offering shop time. My space is small and I live with my type and presses, so space for bodies is limited. If you’d like to talk about my teaching in Somerville as well, I’d be happy to discuss. 20 years practical experience.

The Pyramid model (or that of any number of Book Arts Centers) is interesting. I have ideas about extending the offerings but am going to play those cards close for the moment.

As an aside, and since I strolled through Pyramid’s site last night, I find it a bit disturbing that the nomenclature around letterpress is used incorrectly in a number of instances. That makes me wonder the level of expertise of the instructors. Not so say they don’t have skills, but at least that they don’t talk about the process correctly. Words form thoughts, thoughts coalesce into ideas, and ideas govern actions. When the words are malformed…

  7. Do you guys know about http://www.bbboston.org/, and (as a source for potential support) The Club of Odd Volumes?

  8. Melinda,
Nice meeting you at the Book Arts Meeting. Your space sounds really interesting. I’d love to come by and check it out sometime before the summer is over.
